Intro

There is a difference between woodwork that looks good and woodwork that is good. At Very Good Building & Contracting Co., our custom carpentry and millwork division produces pieces built to the latter standard — from built-in cabinetry and bookshelves to staircases, mantels, and architectural trim. Everything is built to order, sized and finished to the specific space it’s going into, and made to last. This is not mass-produced work dressed up to look custom. It is custom.

Our Process

01. Consultation & Design We meet to discuss the piece or project, take measurements, and talk through wood species, finish, and design details. We ask the right questions so the finished product reflects what you actually had in mind.

02. Material Selection & Approval We present material options and a detailed written quote. Work doesn’t begin until you’ve approved the design and scope in writing.

03. Build The work is built in our shop by experienced craftspeople, with the precision that custom millwork requires. Timelines vary by complexity, and we’ll give you a realistic one upfront.

04. Installation We install everything ourselves. Fit and finish are verified on-site, and any adjustments are made before we leave.

Why Choose Us For This

Built by people who care about the craft. Our millwork team takes this work personally. The standard isn’t “close enough” — it’s right.

Built for the specific space. Everything is measured and made for where it’s going. Nothing is adapted from a standard size and called custom.

Built to last. We select wood species and finishes for durability, not just appearance. A piece built by this team should be in good shape long after everything else in the room has been replaced.

FAQ

What wood species do you work with? We work with a wide range of domestic and select hardwoods — oak, walnut, maple, cherry, ash, and others depending on availability and project requirements. We’ll help you choose the right species for the look, durability, and budget you have in mind.

How long does a custom piece take? It depends on complexity and our current production schedule. Simple trim packages may be ready in a few weeks. Larger built-in projects or custom staircases can take longer. We provide a production and installation timeline with every quote.

Can you match existing millwork in an older home? In most cases, yes. We’ve worked with homes of various ages and architectural styles and have experience replicating or complementing existing profiles and details.

Is custom millwork significantly more expensive than stock alternatives? There is a cost difference, and we won’t pretend otherwise. What you’re paying for is fit, quality, and longevity. A built-in that’s made for the space will look and function better than anything off the shelf, and it will hold up longer. We’ll give you an honest quote and let you decide.
